20 Great Escapes • D Magazine - Dallas, USA • March 2006 • (www.dmagazine.com)

...But perhaps the most special boutique, one that we stumbled upon quite by accident—on the way to dinner at Garga, actually—is Il Tamarino Stampe d’Arte (Via del Moro 46/r, +39 055 282457; www.iltamarino.com ), which combines Florence’s two finest assets: art and shopping. Here they make fine limited-edition etchings using a process believed to have originated in Florence in the early 16th century, in which a copper plate is covered in a wax varnish and etched, then immersed in a mordant that corrodes the copper where the wax has been removed. The plate is then inked, covered with a dampened piece of paper, and passed through the printing press. The dry print is then watercolored, producing a unique image. You’ll be hard-pressed (sorry) to choose between from pristine Florentine cityscapes, Tuscan landscapes, and darling botanicals and butterflies—each a special keepsake from this magical and majestic place.

A beautiful couple who do imaginative etchings with watercolors. he does the etchings and she does the watercolors. worth finding. Go late in the afternoon to listen to their passion and then stop at Harry's on the way home.

A stunning shop-cum-gallery selling original etchings and frames made by the artist-owners and their friends. No "art snobbery" here - the owners are English-speaking and happily spend time with you, explaining how they make the etchings and frames. With our purchase, we got a cup of tea and a fab local restaurant recommendation. Whether you want a unique memento of Florence or an original gift, Il Tamarino is well worth a visit.

I traveled through Florence as part of my study abroad group and celebrated my 21st birthday there. My group bought me a print of Florence from Il Tamarino. Later, during the rest of my travels, it was stolen in backpack. I ordered a second, replacement print and Mr. Mearini was very kind and accommodating, discounting the price of the replacement print for me because of my situation and shipping it safely to my house in the United States in a matter of days. The print is beautiful and the process was well worth it!

Hello Sophia and Pierre
So sorry to have missed you, Sophia. We got back from our tour at past 8:00 on Friday and did walk past your place in the chance you were still there. Pierre, it was so nice to visit with you again when we picked up the "cherished" print and other goodies. Your hospitality was so very thoughtful. Many, many thanks. On our way to the train this morning, I dropped off a "Canada " souvenir. Hopefully you can use it. We will always be grateful for the time you gave to us on our visit to Florence. Truly an amazing time for us.
With Love

I bought (3) pieces from Il Tamarino & they are beautiful works of art & will always remind me of the very special trip my Mom & I took to Italy (Budapest & Poland) this past spring.
The hosts were as warm, kind, accommodating & informative as they could be. I felt like I was in their living room & speaking to old friends.
Keep doing what you do & being who you are!

Strolling along the narrow streets of Florence, we found an abundance of antique shops, fine art galleries, art workshops, print shops. There are many fine art ateliers in Florence, and we were lucky when we walked through the door of "il Tamarino".
Owners Sophia and Pier made us a cup of tea while we tried to decide which small pieces we would take home with us on our bikes. The walls, flat files and tables were filled with beautiful gems. Choosing was not an easy task.
What a special memory we will always have of Pier and Sophia at their fine art etching workshop/gallery! We learned so much about their processes, and our time there cemented the respect we've always had for printmaking of all kinds. A return visit in the future would be wonderful, and we hope that may happen soon.

I'd like to recommend a great art gallery, Il Tamarino.  Beautiful, inexpensive etchings of Tuscany landscapes and Florence sights.  The artist/owner, Pier Mearini gave us a lesson in the process of etching and watercolor.
